Book Arbitrage

One of my more profitable methods to make money is selling used books on Amazon which is commonly referred to as book arbitrage.

You buy a bunch of books, list them on Amazon FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon), ship them all in one box to Amazon and Amazon handles all the selling, shipping and support.
You even get Amazons discount rates to ship to Amazon. It costs me $8 to ship 50 pounds to Amazon. That would cost about $40 to ship myself.

This works because Amazon Prime members are willing to pay more for books than the typical market price.
You can actually buy books in Amazon marketplace for 0.01 plus $3.99 shipping so $4 total and sell it FBA for $40 or more!

It can be done buying the books locally and shipping to Amazon which is called offline book arbitrage or it can be done buying online and shipping to Amazon which is called online book arbitrage.

This method works best in USA because Amazon USA is much bigger than in other countries.
I have heard it done on Amazon Canada and Amazon UK.

Online book arbitrage can be done outside USA by using processing centers in the USA that add around $2 per book.
Some USA sellers also use processing centers to reduce labor.
Depending on the center they can receive your online orders, clean them, rate them, list them, and ship them to Amazon.

You can’t just buy any book and expect to make a profit on it. The sales rank is very important. Amazon tells you the sales rank on their listing.
Anything under 1 million is considered a good seller. I tend to stay under 500K.
Fiction books are rarely profitable. Textbooks tend to give the best profit. Other profitable categories are cookbooks, politics, how to, homeschooling to name a few.

You can buy books locally for much cheaper at library sales, thrift shops, goodwill or even colleges.

At library sales you can buy books as cheap as 0.25 or even less if they have bag sales where you can fill a bag for $1, $2 or $5.

There is a new course out that teaches this method where you buy locally and sell on Amazon.

I do a mixture of buying both online and offline locally.

Below are my recent 30 day book sales on Amazon. About 60% is profit.
