Stop Windows from Automatically Restarting And Installing Updates

I leave my computers on all the time. Many times I have documents or windows that have not been saved. Sometimes Windows automatically restarts and doesn’t save these items and installs the updates. There is a setting in Windows to prevent this but it seems to ignore it for critical updates.

The Windows standard setting to prevent this:

Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.

In the left pane, click Change settings.

Under Important updates, choose the option that you want.

Under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates check box, and then click OK.
If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

You can then do the following which is what solved the issue for me.

Click Start -> Run
Enter “gpedit.msc”
Go to Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update
Double-click on “No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Update installation”
Enable it!
Reboot the computer
